Overview

Choosing an outdoor setting

Outdoor wedding venues in Singapore fall into three groups: gardens, beaches, and heritage grounds. A garden wedding in Singapore gives you greenery and skyline views, a beach wedding gives you a shoreline and sunset, and heritage parks add architecture to the backdrop.

The legal side is flexible. The Registry of Marriages (ROM) says couples are free to choose a venue that suits them, including scenic outdoor spots such as the Botanic Gardens, and a licensed solemniser can marry you on any day of the week, including weekends and public holidays. Our guide to registering at ROM covers the steps and the S$42 fee.

Each venue below is described only as far as its own website says. Ask for a current quote.

Weather

Rain and heat: planning a wet-weather backup

Rain is the main risk for any outdoor wedding in Singapore. The Meteorological Service Singapore says the country has abundant rainfall all year, averaging 171 rain days a year, with no distinct wet or dry season.

It does publish a pattern by month. Rainfall is higher from November to January. The early Northeast Monsoon, usually December to early January, can bring widespread continuous moderate to heavy rain. The inter-monsoon months of October and November bring afternoon and early evening thunderstorms, at times severe. February is the driest month. Afternoons from late March to May are often hot, with maximum temperatures above 32 degrees Celsius.

So if your date falls in October, November or December, assume you will need a plan B, and that a late afternoon ceremony carries more thunderstorm risk than a morning one.

  • Ask each venue what its wet-weather space is, how many guests it holds, and who makes the call and by what time.
  • Book the indoor backup at the same time as the outdoor space, and ask whether it costs extra.
  • Choose a ceremony time earlier in the day where you can, and ask your planner about covered walkways, tents and umbrellas.
  • Plan comfort: shade, fans, water and a short ceremony in the heat.

ROM says that if your solemnisation venue, date or time changes after you submit, you must update your application, and a prescribed fee of $25 applies. Online changes are allowed up to 5 days before your ROM appointment.

Permits and rules

Permits and venue rules

Only some outdoor venues need a permit from you. At the Singapore Botanic Gardens, NParks says submissions for permits are required at least 14 days before the date of use, and that casual photography such as family portraits does not need one. Filming and wedding solemnisation applications are separate online applications. The Gardens’ rules also bar tents and furniture, and shelters cannot be used exclusively for private events.

At Gardens by the Bay and on Sentosa, you book through the venue, so arrangements follow each venue’s own terms. We have not found a public permit requirement for either on their wedding pages, so ask when you enquire.

Frequently asked questions

Can we legally marry outdoors in Singapore?

Yes. ROM says you can choose a venue that suits you, including outdoor spots, on any day of the week, with a licensed solemniser booked. Your application must be submitted at least 21 days before the date. See our ROM registration guide.

What are the best outdoor wedding venues in Singapore?

It depends on the setting you want. Gardens by the Bay and the Botanic Gardens suit garden weddings, and Sentosa’s beaches and beach clubs suit beach weddings. Each is listed above with the facts the venue publishes.

Can we hold a beach wedding in Singapore?

Sentosa’s wedding page offers exclusive strips of Siloso, Tanjong and Palawan beaches, and beachfront venues such as Tanjong Beach Club and Shangri-La Rasa Sentosa.

Which month is least likely to rain?

The Meteorological Service Singapore says February is the driest month. Late January to early March is the drier phase of the Northeast Monsoon. Rain is still possible, so keep a backup.

Do we need a permit for a garden wedding?

At the Singapore Botanic Gardens, NParks requires submissions at least 14 days before the date of use. For other venues, ask the venue.

How much does an outdoor wedding venue cost?

Most of these venues do not publish wedding rates. The exception above is Burkill Hall, whose rates are quoted as published by the Botanic Gardens. Request quotes and compare what each includes.
